영어를 배우려고 미국 합작사 대우 ITT에 대리로 들어가 영광 원전용 배관을 만들었다. 결함 하나 허용되지 않는 일이었지만 반년 만에 일감이 끊겼고 이 년쯤 뒤 회사를 나왔다. 대신 영어를 얻었고 그것이 다음 길을 열었다.
