30만 원으로 기계 한 대를 만들어 부자재 장사를 시작했다. 청계천 남의 가게 귀퉁이를 빌렸다가 오물이 있던 계단 밑 연탄창고를 얻어 울면서 들어갔는데, 거기서 대박이 터졌다. 공장일은 아내가 맡았다.
