오빠가 밤새 화자를 업고 수원에서 일죽까지 걸어 어머니를 보게 했다. 얼마 뒤 어머니가 돌아가셨고, 장삿날 병풍을 열자 피눈물 흘린 얼굴이 보였던 장면을 평생 잊지 못한다.
