제대 후 서울에서 운전면허를 따고 뚝섬 판자촌에서 자취하며 택시 일을 시작했다. 초보 시절 단속 경찰에게 벌금을 물고 돈을 융통하며 버텼고, 1975년까지 택시를 몰며 서울에 뿌리를 내렸다.
