광복되던 해 산골 마을에서 일곱 남매의 셋째 딸로 태어났다. 밥에 감자를 얹어 먹던 가난 속에서 아버지가 병들자 나무를 하고 품삯 일을 하며 살림 밑천이 되었다. 아들을 바라던 아버지가 이름에 '사내 남' 자를 붙인 사연도 있다.
