화자는 1938년 황해도 해주에서 교장이던 아버지와 개성 부잣집 출신 어머니 사이에서 태어났다. 어머니는 속아서 일찍 혼인해 많은 자식을 키웠다. 오빠 셋을 서울로 유학 보낸 어머니는 밤마다 노래로 그리움을 달랬다.
