전북 이리의 초등학교 교실에서 피난 생활을 하며 삼 년을 보냈다. 둘째 오빠의 죽음과 구호 물자, 이웃의 온정을 겪었고 하꼬방에서 지냈다. 열여섯에 부모의 뜻으로 홀로 서울로 먼저 올라가게 되었다.
