해방 두 해 뒤 여섯 남매의 넷째로 태어난 화자는 피난길에 할머니 등에 업혀 전쟁을 건넜다고 전해 들었다. 마을에서도 뚝 떨어진 외딴 초가집의 캄캄하고 적막한 밤이 어린 마음에 무서웠다.
