전쟁이 나자 아버지는 가족이 흩어지지 않도록 남쪽 피난 대신 북쪽 산골 능안으로 올라갔다. 종손인 큰형만은 외가에 맡겨 부산까지 피난을 보냈다. 나머지 가족은 시골에서 전쟁을 온몸으로 겪었다.
