황해도 해주에서 태어나 아버지를 따라 남쪽으로 피난하던 길, 배 위에서 울던 아기를 할머니가 덮어 숨을 막았으나 살아남았다. 마산, 부산, 서울을 거쳐 인천에 닿았지만 아버지는 이미 새 살림을 차려 집이 갈라졌다.
